Marvel Fictional Places, Planets and Dimensions
Friday, November 23, 2007 at 02:14AM This list is being updated and is still under some construction.
The Marvel Universe is composed of many magical places, strange countries, hidden lairs and weird dimensions. Here's a basic map for you if you get lost.
Asgard - Home to the Norse gods (known as the Aesir in ancient mythology). Asgard was surrounded by other lesser realms where there dwelt the allies and enemis of the Asgardians. To reach the gates of Asgard, one needed to cross the rainbow bridge called Bifrost, where stood Heimdall, ever-vigilant watchman of the gods. Asgard has always held a special link to the planet Earth. Originally located outside of Earth's dimension, Asgard was destroyed a couple of years ago and then recetly recreated. Now it exists in the same dimensional plane as Earth and hovers above the state of Oklahoma. For further details, see the upcoming Thor history essay.
Attilan - Home city of the Inhumans (see Marvel Races and Organizations). Originally located in the Himilayas, it was later moved to the Blue Area of the Moon (see entry below) when the Kree-Skrull War crossed over onto Earth (see Marvel Events). Then the Inhumans decided to hide out in the Himalays again and then the city wound up becoming based on a satellite orbitting Earth (thanks to the alien Kree Empire, who wanted to use the place as a military base). Finally, it was moved back to the Blue Area of the Moon. Hopefully it will stay there becuase it's a bit ridiculous that this city has relocated itself more than I have in my life.
Blue Area of the Moon - Located on Earth's moon is an area that appears blue via telescopes. The area was given a localized and perfectly sustained atmosphere by aliens known as the Cotati in an effort to win a contest of technology against the alien Kree. Likewise, a city was built there but it and the area were abandoned. The Blue Area is home to the Inhumans and to Uatu, a member of the alien race known as Watchers (see Watchers in the glossary).
The Dark Dimension - A Hellish reality connected to our own where magical forces run rampant. It is home to the demonic entity known as Dormammu and also houses the savage race of stone monsters known as the Mindless Ones.
Doomstadt - The capitol city of Latveria (see entry below). Victor von Doom's castle is housed in Doomstadt.
Genosha - An island nation that originally used mutants as slaves. It was later conquered by the mutant terrorist Magneto and made into a haven for mutants who swore loyalty to him. Later on, Genosha was attacked by several powerful sentinel robots and over 90% of its mutant population was killed. The island remains a wasteland and is uninhabited save for a few scattered survivors.
The Helicarrier - The mobile air-fortress that serves as the main HQ for S.H.I.E.L.D. The helicarrier was recently renovated and updated by Tony Stark (AKA Iron Man and current Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.). It houses hundreds of agents, can serve as an aircraft carrier for planes and jets, and has a war room that monitors and links up to databases and government offices around the world. The Helicarrier refuels at various special facilities around the world and thus rarely ever needs to land.
Latveria - A European country bordering Hungary, Latveria is a tiny nation that remains detached from the outside world for the most part. The capitol city is Doomstadt. For many years now, it has been ruled by Victor Von Doom (AKA Dr. Doom). Despite the fact that he is one of the smartest humans alive and employs incredibly advanced technology in his castle, Doom does not share this with the common people and so they are still behind in machinery and appliances (just a couple of levels above the Amish, basically). During one of Doom's absences, a new Prime Minister took over, backed by the U.S. government. When it was discovered she was supplying various American super-villains with advanced weapons and tech, Nick Fury (then Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.) illegally executed her since the U.S. would not do so.
The Negative Zone - An anti-matter dimension that is a reflection of our own universe. Scientific laws work differently there in some cases and time passes at a different rate. The Fantastic Four have a gateway to the Negative Zone in their headquarters. Recently, the Negative Zone has become the home of a super-human prison called 42.
Soul World - A world that exists inside the Soul Gem (one of the Infinity Gems). This is a realm where spirits absorbed by the Soul Gem may continue to live as unaging physical beings. It resembles a lush paradise with wide fields of grass, a forest and even a few moutains.
Titan - In the Marvel Universe, two Eternals who left Earth later settled on Saturn's moon Titan and started a family in a colony built beneath the surface. These two Eternals were named A'lars (often called "Mentor" in later years) and his wife Sui-San and they fathered all the inhabitants of Titan. Titan's computer and life-support systems are maintained by the super-computer ISAAC. Like all Eternals, the Titans are extremely long-lived, are nearly invulnerable to harm by conventional standards, and can manipulate cosmic energies for a variety of effects. Two famous inhabitants of Titan are the hero Starfox (who served as an Avenger) and the "Mad Titan" Thanos, who has nearly conquered/destroyed the universe on a few occasions.
Wakanda - A tiny African nation that remained cut-off and hidden from the outside world for many years, it is the most technologically advanced country on the planet Earth. Ruled by King T'Challa (the hero called Black Panther) and his wife Ororo (formerly Storm of the X-Men), Wakanda's primary income stems from their technology and the fact that the unique metal ore vibranium can only be found in their mines (see Vibranium in the glossary). A special heart-shaped herb grows in Wakanda that can allow whoever eats it to develop heightened senses. These herbs are given to every king of Wakanda, who takes on the warrior mantle of their totem, the black panther.
